Topographic Survey of Ethiopian Lake Excites Interest

International and local consulting firms have expressed interest in undertaking a topographic survey of Lake Tana, Ethiopia. The topographic survey is expected to contribute to efforts to eliminate the dangers of flooding.

The topographic survey on the flood prone areas of the sub-basin is expected to identify landscape values and the nature of floods for the flood management system being designed by the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy.

It is expected that the survey will show the characteristics of the landscape including natural and manmade features said an expert at the Ministry.

The results from the survey will serve as a warning for residents in flood prone areas according to a source at water and energy ministry.

The Ministry plans to hire consultants to conduct the survey, covering Fogera and Dembia Woredas, at a projected cost of 5.75 million US dollars.

The flood management system is a part of the 70 million US dollar Tana Beles Integrated Water Resources Development. The project is being funded by the government of Finland and the World Bank Group.

The winning consultants will obtain data to prepare a topographic map to enable the ministry to prepare a flood risk map for processing real time flood forecasts. The consultant will also be required to conduct specific studies to allow better preparation before actual floods occur.

The Ministry of Water and Energy will evaluate the proposals received from consulting firms interested in the project and prepare a shortlist of six bidders as per financial and technical offers according to Ministry sources.
