Ethiopia Secures USD 2 Billion from Foreign Tourists

More than 900,000 international tourists visited Ethiopia in the last fiscal year, generating USD 2 billion in revenue for the tourism sector.

On average, each tourist stayed for 16 days and spent approximately USD 234 per day. In addition to international tourists, over 20 million local tourists participated in conferences and other related tourism activities during the same period and Birr 61.1 billion was received from domestic visitors in the 2022/2023 fiscal year.

The Ministry has implemented various measures to enhance service quality, improve tourist destinations, and develop infrastructure. Currently, the Ministry is focused on swiftly reopening service establishments, particularly hotels and restaurants, in the states of Amhara, Afar, and Tigray. They are also actively constructing lodges, digital centers, landmarks, and other necessary infrastructure in areas of tourist interest. The Ministry is encouraging both local and international tourists to participate in upcoming festivals and holidays, such as Ashenda, Shadey, Solele, and others, which will be held in these regions.
