Ethiopia Plans to Replace Imported Transformers and Electric Cables with Domestic Products

Ministry of Industry Power Supply

The Ministry of Industry announced that it was working to replace imported electric cables and transformers with locally produced products during a discussion forum with Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) and other stakeholders. The institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding which enables them to work together.

According to the Ministry, the number of companies that produce transformers, electric cables, and spare parts for transformers is increasing.

Ethiopia currently provides 68 thousand kilowatts of power to companies. The Ministry of Industry is working with EEP and EEU to increase this figure to 255 thousand kilowatts. It stressed the need for increased power supply by revealing that 64 new companies would join the manufacturing sector in the 2022/2023 fiscal year.
EEP has plans to construct an electric distribution line for industries which is separate from the primary transmission and distribution line.
