Ethiopia Earns USD 41.8 Million from Meat Export

Ethiopia secured USD 41.8 million from exporting 5,900 tons of meat products. Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait are among the top destinations for Ethiopian meat. According to Ethiopian Agricultural Authority, Ethiopia has the potential to export 200 thousand tons of meat per year.

In November this year, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a National Red Meat Strategy which was formulated to increase red meat production and export, enhance the red meet markets, and develop the productivity of feed industries. Red meat development is also one of the major focus areas of the Ministry of Agriculture’s 10 years plan.

Ethiopia ranks sixth in the world in livestock resources even though it fails to meet the domestic demand for red meat. The MoA has plans to collect 1.7 million tons of red meat at the end of the current fiscal year.
