Ethiopian Airlines said that it had completed a study to commence construction of a mega project called “Airport City” in Oromia Regional State in the 2022/2023 fiscal year. The project will include modern hotels, duty free shopping centers and, a cargo logistics center and take USD 5 billion to be completed.

According to Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, the project may be divided into two phases. He also stated that companies that would design and construct the project would be selected following a bid process.

The project was first announced in 2019. Initial announcements made at the time revealed that the Airport City would be located around the town of Bishoftu, Oromia, on 35 square kilometers of land. It was also reported that upon completion, the Airport City would have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers.
