The Ministry of Agriculture launched a National Red Meat Strategy which was formulated to increase red meat production and export, enhance the red meet markets, and develop the productivity of feed industries.
According to Tsigereda Fikadu, CEO of Livestock and Fisheries Development Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Government’s commitment to the livestock sector is revealed under the Lemat Tirufat Project, a four year’s development campaign which is being implemented since November this year. Red meat development is also one of the major focus areas of the Ministry of Agriculture’s (MoA) 10 years plan.
Ethiopia ranks sixth in the world in livestock resources even though it fails to meet the domestic demand for red meat. The MoA has plans to collect 1.7 million tons of red meat at the end of the current fiscal year.
