Ethiopia Starts Power Transmission to Kenya

The Ethio-Kenya 500KV power transmission line and substation started power transmission today. The power transmission line has the capacity to transmit 2000MW of electricity to Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa and has the potential to generate USD 100 million annually from the sale of electricity.

Ethiopia has a power purchase agreement to export electricity to Kenya for 25 years which will be implemented in three phases. During the first phase of the agreement Ethiopia will export 65MW of electricity during off-peak hours and 200MW of electricity during peak hours.

According to the reports of Ethiopian Electric Power, Ethiopia gained USD 95.4 million from electricity exported to Sudan Djibouti. Ethiopia has a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, Tanzania, and South Sudan on electricity export.
