Ethiopia Considers Exporting Rice to the International Market

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reported to the Ethiopian Parliament yesterday that Ethiopia registered growth in various economic sectors. According to the Prime Minister, the agriculture sector registered a 6.1% growth in the last fiscal year.

The Prime Minister also stated that Ethiopia was expecting to produce 8 million quintals of rice in this Ethiopian year which would surpass the demand for the cereal in the country which stood at 5 million quintals. This will enable Ethiopia to export the product to international markets. Ethiopia was also able to plant seven billion coffee seedlings. Moreover, the industry sector grew by 4.9% while the service sector registered a growth of 7.6%. Ethio Telecom and Ethiopian Airlines take the lion’s share for the level of growth the service sector achieved. Ethio Telecom increased its customer base to 68.9 million while Ethiopian Airlines was able to become profitable amid the Covid-19 crisis.
