Ethiopia Embassy in China Taste from the Origin

Ethiopian Embassy in Beijing held Ethiopian Coffee Cupping and Promotion Event with a view to create a better awareness of the unique quality and taste of Ethiopian coffee. Ethiopia exported 12,380 tons of coffee to China in 2021 which showed a 196% increase when compared to the 2020 export which amounted to 4,178.9 tons.

During the event, Ambassador Teshome Toga, Ethiopian Ambassador to China, revealed that the bilateral trade volume between Ethiopia and China reached USD 2.19 billion. China has become one of the largest importers of Ethiopian coffee.

The event, which was organized under the theme “Taste from the Origin”, saw the participation of Ambassadors from various African countries and representatives from Chinese business communities.

Ethiopia exported 300,000 metric tons of coffee to the international market and obtained a record USD 1.4 billion in the 2021/2022 fiscal year. The success was attributable to some measures which were implemented to boost the trade such as modernizing the logistics service and facilitating loans to coffee exporters and suppliers.

The country aims to increase coffee export to USD 4.6 billion within 15 years and its global market share to 1.26 million metric tons by 2033.
