Ethiopia: Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone Starts Operation

Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone was launched on Sunday by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The free trade zone was established as part of Ethiopia’s 10 years development plan, it was learnt.

It is reported that Dire Dawa’s proximity to ports, market potential, and sustainability for multimodal transportation and logistics operation has made it preferrable for Ethiopia’s first free trade zone. According to the Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority, additional free trade zones will be established in other parts of the country.Dire Dawa FTZ Dr Abiy

Speaking during the event, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the free trade zones were one of Ethiopia’s strategies to integrate into a rapidly changing world. He also noted, “I have no doubt that the zones will not only facilitate trade and investment but also enhance our technological capabilities”.

Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone is expected to provide support for the manufacturing, importing, and exporting procedures. It will also offer customs duties privileges and play a significant part in reducing the cost of logistics.
