Ethiopia: RIDE Drivers to Provide Telecom Services

ethio-telecom-logoEthio telecom and Hybrid Designs have partnered to utilize telebirr digital payment system with a view to integrating telecom and telebirr services with RIDE transport service. The two companies signed an agreement that will enable RIDE transport service providers to collect monthly ethio telecom and utility bill payments, register new telebirr customers, upgrade telebirr customer levels, provide cash in and cash out services, and sell airtime and package services.

In addition, the drivers of RIDE will be engaged in selling new SIM cards and delivering replacement SIM cards to customers and provide a variety of other services of Ethio telecom. RIDE transport service charges can also be paid using telebirr.

Ethio telecom stated that it was strongly committed to implementing telebirr integrated service payments with other similar institutions and make multiple payments possible in one place in the near future. In a statement posted on its website, it also noted that it was “highly engaged in transforming the platform into new heights and extends its reach far beyond purchases and digital money transfer, thereby making digital Ethiopia’s set vision a reality that is once thought very distant to happen”.

Telebirr was launched in May last year and it has managed to have 19.4 million subscribers.
