Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, speaking at a panel discussion on industrial development organized by Ethiopian Press Agency under the theme ‘About Ethiopia’, stated that the Government was interested to increase the role and contribution of local investors in the manufacturing sector.

According to the minister, the private sector has already become a major employer and the Government is facilitating the active participation of local investors in the manufacturing sector by creating a favorable business climate and making available land and other facilities.

The Minister remarked that the Government was striving to expand infrastructure, ensure the rule of law, and alleviate bureaucratic hurdles in the provision of public services. It was further reported that the Development Bank of Ethiopia provided a substantial amount of loans for local businesses in the manufacturing sector.

Ahmed Shide noted that the Government also supported collaborations between foreign and domestic investors since “our financial and technical capabilities are limited”. He reflected that the Government encouraged the participation of foreign investors with the desired capital, technology, and expertise.
