The Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy concluded a 2.4 million birr project to assess the Water Sanitation and Hygiene of Addis Ababa on the 1st of December as part of a national effort.
It is expected that the information gathered will play a crucial role in helping Ethiopia provide 100% water supply coverage.
The assessment included water supply for households, sanitary facilities, and the financial ability of households to pay the water rates. The inventory was carried out by data collectors trained from each area.
The project is part of an effort to create a national WASH inventory on the hygiene, drinking water and sanitation facilities in health institutions, schools as well as households. The 2007 census had provided some information on the state of the national water supply and sanitation. According to the data collected than the hygiene and sanitary state of Addis Ababa leaves much to be desired.
The results for the assessment carried out in Dire Dawa City Administration and Harari and Afar regions in November of last year is being encoded by the regional task forces. The process will begin in Somali Regional State soon according to Tamene Hailu, National Coordinator for the inventory.
A total of 200 million birr has spent in financing aspects of the project including data collection and encoding at the national level. The project was funded by donor organizations and the Ethiopian government.
The project is being overseen by a task force made up eight representatives for the MoWE and the education, health and communication offices in partnership with a committee headed by the office of the Mayor.
