Ethiopia's 6-Month Coffee Export Earnings Rise to $578Mn, with China as Top Buyer

coffee-beans-roastedEthiopia has obtained $578 million from coffee exports in six months, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority announced, with China emerging as the top buyer of Ethiopian coffee.

The performance exceeds the target set for the period, the Authority related. 148,000 tons of coffee has been exported during the period, against a target of 123,000 tons.

China has emerged as the top buyer of Ethiopian coffee, its imports of which rose by over 196 percent during the period. Germany used to be the top buyer of Ethiopian coffee previously, followed by Saudi Arabia and Belgium.

Shefi Umer, Deputy Director of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, said Ethiopia's coffee export capacity has been continuously on the rise, managing to export over 1,000 tons of coffee per day.

Compared to the same period the previous year, earnings from coffee export have shown a remarkable rise of $274 million.
