Ethiopia's Ministry of Revenues said it has found out that transactions worth over 32 billion birr have been made using illegal cash register machines. The Ministry made the discovery following an investigation it conducted that exposed 63 illegal enterprises, and seized twenty illegal cash register machines.
The twenty cash register machines now seized have been used to issue fake receipts for transactions worth 32,527,510,503.05 birr, the Ministry stated.
In a reltaed note, 199 people have been taken into custody in relation to making sales without issuing receipts, the Ministry of Revenues related. These will face a penalty of up to 8.15 million birr.
The Ministry has called on the society to inform the authorities when witnessing fraudulent activities.
