Ethiopia's Lake Wonchi Chosen "Best Tourist Village of 2021" by World Tourism Organization

lake-wonchiEthiopia's Lake Wonchi has been chosen as the best tourist village of 2021 at the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization, which is being held in Madrid, Spain. Lake Wonchi has been selected best from 170 tourist villages across the world.

Lake Wonchi, located in the southwest of Shoa, Oromia region, is a site of a crater lake and splendid view. 

Ambassador Nasise Chali, Ethiopia's Minister of Tourism, sending a congratulatory message upon Lake Wonchi's selection, has thanked all stakeholders for taking care of the natural resources in the area.

Such an international recognition of natural resources would "set an example for others and motivate them to do more," Ambassador Nasise noted, adding that tourism is one of Ethiopia's top priority sectors. Accordingly, she said, community-based sustainable tourism development activities will be carried out.

The 'Best Tourism Village' award by UN's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) pilot initiative aims to award those villages which are outstanding examples of rural destinations and showcase best practices in line with its specified evaluation areas. It also aims to support villages to enhance their rural tourism potential through training and access to opportunities for improvement.

An Ethiopian delegation led by Selamwit Dawit, State Minister of Tourism, is attending the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization.
