Ethiopian, Djibouti Free Zone Join to Launch Sea-Air Cargo Operation

ethiopian-cargo-planeEthiopian Airlines and Djibouti Free Zone have launched a sea-air cargo operation with a capacity of discharging 17 tons of electronic and home appliances from Shenzhen, China to the Nigerian cities of Lagos and Kano via Djibouti.

Capitalizing on Ethiopian's reputation as the leading air cargo service provider in Africa, and coupled with the competitive geo-strategic advantage Djibouti has, this project, when fully operational, is expected to double the cargo operation of the carrier and make Djibouti a hub for sea-air cargo logistics.

The launching ceremony was attended by Aboubaker Omar Hadi, Chairperson of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zone Authority, Biniam Ephrem, Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines, a diplomat representing the Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti, as well as other important stakeholders in the supply chain.

Sea-air cargo is twice as fast as sea transport and incurs half the cost. Hence, it is expected it would massively scale up trade relations between Ethiopia and Djibouti in particular, and Africa and Asia, especially China, in general.

The Ethiopian government has identified transport and logistics as a "game-changer" to maintain the country's economic growth strategy, emphasizing it in its 10-year prospective plan, and prioritizing the bolstering of e-commerce and the efficiency of the logistics sector.
