lake-ayalew-minister-of-revenues-first-q-report-2021The Ethiopian Ministry of Revenues announced it has collected over 70.11 billion birr during the first quarter of the Ethiopian fiscal year that started July 8, 2021. The amount stands at 91.24 percent of the over 76.84 billion birr revenue collection target the Ministry had set for the period.

The Ministry has collected 38.762 billion birr from domestic taxes, achieving more than its target of 38.685 billion birr, while it collected 31.277 billion birr from customs duties, falling short of its target of 38.107 billion birr, Lake Ayalew, Minister of Revenues, related.

Mr. Lake noted that the overall performance of revenues collection has shown a 10.6 percent or 6.7 billion birr increase compared to the same period last year. Revenues collected from domestic taxes has shown a rise of 8.54 percent, while those collected from customs duties has shown an increase of 13.4 percent. 71.07 million birr has been collected from lottery sales.

The performance is "encouraging", the Minister highlighted, considering that it is an achievement registered during the coronavirus pandemic, a shortage of foreign currency, elaborate schemes to avoid taxes, and the raging conflict in the north of the country.

Mr. Lake further noted that the Ministry of Revenues is striving to equip its workers with professional competence and servanthood, as well as deploy up-to-date working procedures to better serve Ethiopia's taxpayers.
