Ethiopia: Modjo-Beki-Batu Expressway Goes Operational

Modjo ExpresswayThe Modjo-Beki-Batu expressway, built at a cost of some 6.3 billion birr, has officially begun operations. The 92km long and 32m wide expressway, having five international standard tolling stations, is the third toll road for Ethiopia, after the Addis Ababa-Adama, and the Dire Dawa-Dewale expressways.

Officials from the Transport Ministry, Ethiopian Roads Authority, and Ethiopian Payment Roads Enterprise have been present at a ceremony organized to mark the offical operational launch of the Modjo-Beki-Batu expressway. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had inaugurated the expressway in May this year.

The project has been financed by the Ethiopian government and a loan from teh Korea EXIM and Development Bank.

The expressway is part of a larger project, the Addis Ababa-Adama-Moyale-Mombassa corridor, that aims to connect four African countries via a toll road.
