Agreement Signed for Cross Border Public Transport Between Ethiopia-Kenya

Ethiopia and Kenya have signed an agreement allowing for cross border public transport between the two countries. Public transport across the borders of the two countries will commence when the road project is finalized according to Diriba Kuma, Minister of Transport.

Ethiopia expects to extend cross border public transport arrangements to include Djibouti and Sudan he explained. The document establishing agreement with North Sudan has been drafted and will be completed in the beginning of the coming year noted Diriba.

The agreements take in to account various details including tariffs and standards for vehicles he said.

There is an existing road connecting Ethiopia to Sudan used primarily for the transport of fuel. The new agreement will mean that this road will serve mass transportation allowing relatively cheaper public transport between the two countries.

Previous road travel between Ethiopia and Djibouti had been limited to buses transporting Ethiopian travelers to Djibouti and the highly unreliable rail system. It is expected that a new agreement will enhance the travel opportunities between the two countries it was said.

Ethiopia plans to expand arrangements for cross country road transportation to other countries including South Sudan and Somaliland said Diriba. There are two road projects in progress between Ethiopia and South Sudan and the road between Ethiopia and Somaliland has been finalized on the Ethiopian side he explained.
