Abraham Belay (Ph.D.), Ethiopia's Minister of Innovation and Technology, said that Ethiopia's e-commerce potential market size exceeds 300 billion birr (over $6.64 billion), computed based on performance during the Ethiopian fiscal year ended on July 7, 2021.
Dr. Abraham stated that Ethiopia has devised legal instruments and proclamations to facilitate its capitalization of the digital economy. The legal documents, which the Minister said are sent to the Attorney General for consideration, are aimed at helping in the digitization process, as well as strengthen e-commerce mechanisms in the economy.
The legal documents are expected to be approved by the House of Peoples' Representatives when parliament opens in the Ethiopian new year, in September, Dr. Abraham pointed out.
