Ethiopian Customs Commission Collects 112.5 Bn Birr This FY

customs-commission-2021The Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) announced that it has collected 112.5 billion birr (over $2.5 billion) in the recently concluded fiscal year. The figure stands at 89.58 percent of the 125.5 billion birr target the commission had put forward.

Debela Kebeta, Commissioner of ECC, remarked it has shown a 7.12 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Over three billion birr in customs has been collected from the export of coffee, flowers, khat, and other items, it was learned.

The commissioner said various improvements such as revised laws and regulations, reform tools, and technology-backed practices have contributed to the success of revenue collection despite several challenges Ethiopia is faced with at the time.

Tight law enforcement measures have enabled the commission to save 37billion birr being channeled through contraband trade, Mr. Debela added.
