Ethiopian Airports Enterprise to Introduce Bonded Warehouse

The Ethiopians Airports Enterprise announced plans to inaugurate an 18 million birr bonded warehouse in Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The warehouse will be used to store duty free goods. 85% of the construction of the bonded project has been finalized said Wondim Teklu.

The construction will be completed when the machines required to assemble more buildings are brought in he explained. The construction is being undertaken by Mesfin Industrial Engineering PLC.

The bonded warehouse allows the deferment of duty payment until the goods are moved.

There are four companies including one public enterprise offering duty free services at Bole International Airport.

The bonded warehouse will allow all duty free goods to be brought to one place according to Wondim. The duty free companies at Bole International Airport will have space to store their goods with the proper control mechanisms.

The airports enterprise began the project in June but was delayed due to a land permit clearing issue and the rainy season.

The enterprise could potentially launch similar initiatives in Bahir Dar and Mekelle airports as well Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa International airports according to Wondim.

The bonded warehouse will be managed by the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise renting the warehouse at prices to be determined after the construction is finalized and operations begin.

The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise administers 17 international airports across Ethiopia, at this time. The Enterprise plans to raise Br. 858 million from its activities this year, including Aeronautical and non-Aeronautical services.
