Ethiopian Customs Directive to Exclude Diplomats

The Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority amended the directive that required custom and duties to be calculated for insurance coverage to exclude diplomats.

The directive that enabled the authority to collect customs duties from insurance coverage when accidents occur had caused complaints from international and regional organizations as well as diplomatic missions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked ERCA to assure insurers that it will not claim duties and custom to allow the return money paid to diplomats and representatives of international organizations.

The amended articles are self explanatory and require no additional elaboration according to ERCA. Insurance companies should be clear that the previous provisions do not apply to diplomats it was noted.

Diplomats and international organizations can receive their money back as per the amendment said Messay Shemsu, a supervisor at Nice Insurance Company.
