Ethiopian Roads Authority Signs $751-Mn-Deal to Build 11 Roads

Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) signed road construction agreements to construct fifteen roads worth 25.8 billion birr. The agreements were signed with eleven firms, local and Chinese on Thursday.

As per the agreements signed, the eleven contractors will build roads with a total length of 1,022 kilometers, including one heavy road repair and one gravel road. The firms that signed the agreement with the Authority are: YOTEK construction PLC, ECWC, DMC construction PLC, China Railway 7th Group, China Civil Eng. Construction Cooperation, China WU YI Co Ltd, Afework Gidey General Construction, Oromia Road Construction Enterprise, Walabu Construction S.C., Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation, and Defence Construction. 

The roads to be constructed are Tenta-Chegoma-Gashena (44.70km), Guba-Bogondi-Wonbera-Kont-Kong (61.72km), Pawi-Mankush-Guba (69.80km), Jaga-Qorit-Arebgebeya-Sekelela-Telili (62km), Dembidelo-Mugahi-Gambela (51km), Sheshmene-Halaba (68km), Dire Dawa- Shnele (17.3km), Omo-Maji (68km), Yasa-Gelasa (100km), Dodola-Debub Wassha-Guba (178km), Metu bypass road project (8.7km), Nejo-Garso-Begi (65km), Siyo-Shenen-Guder (91.8km), Yabelo lot 3-Kanticha-Shakiso (70km), and Guleso-Chabiya (66km).

Habtamu Tegegne, Director General of ERA, speaking during the signing of the agreements, said the government is "pleased [since the] contribution to the economy [will be] high because of the high demand for road construction.” The construction costs of the road projects will be covered by the Ethiopian government.

The construction of the roads is expected to come to completion in a period ranging from a year and a half to four years, Mr. Habtamu pointed out.
