Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) traded 74,950 tons of commodities, which are worth $117 million (3.84 billion birr) during the month of March, the Exchange disclosed in a statement sent to 2Merkato.com.
During the 21 trading days in the month, 29,784 tons of coffee, 25,691 tons of sesame, 8,122 tons of soya bean, 7,338 tons of white and red pea bean, and 4,014 tons of green mung bean have been transacted.
Coffee accounted for 63 percent of the trade value and 40 percent of the trade volume during the period. Export coffee took the lion’s share, accounting for 66 percent in trade value and 70 percent in trade volume of the total amount of coffee traded. The total amount of coffee traded during the period amounted to a worth of 2.4 billion birr.
A total of 25,691 tons of sesame has been traded on ECX’s platform, with a value of close to 1.07 billion birr. The figure has shown a decline of 28 percent in volume and 30 percent in value compared to the previous month.
Other commodities traded during the month were: 8,122 tons of soya bean for 97.14 million birr, 7,338 tons of white and red pea bean for 155.95 million birr, and 4,014 tons of green mung bean for 104.6 million birr.
ECX has further expressed it is taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread and effect of the coronavirus in its headquarters and branch exchange centers.
