Automated Vehicle Inspection to Commence Soon in Ethiopia

Companies, selected by the Ethiopian Transport Authority, to provide Automated Vehicle Inspection are finalizing the required criteria.

The eight companies selected to provide the inspection services are Global Insurance, Gigar Trading, Care Tech plc, Hagbes plc, Tikur Abay Transport SC, MN Drivers plc, Orbis and Reis Engineering. So far only Gigar Trading, Reis Engineering, Hagbes plc and Orbis have fulfilled the requirements set out by the ETA.

The ETA requires inspection facilities to have a 1500m2 parking lot located away from main roads and with clear entrance and exit.

Global Insurance has acquired a 4,182m2 plot in Akaki Kality but is yet to install the machinery required for the automated vehicle inspection. It is ready to finalize an arrangement with Hagbes for the purchase and maintenance of the machinery according to Ahmed Ibrahim General Manager of Global.

Companies are required to install the machines before they are deemed to be ready for service according to Nigussie Kebede director of the vehicle competency assurance directorate.

The ETA determined to forego manual inspections in favor of automated inspections to reduce the high numbers of vehicular accidents caused by faulty cars. The automated inspections will include testing of the brakes, headlights and carbon emissions.

The machines to perform the inspections will be calibrated to a standard customized by a pilot project on selected vehicles said Nigussie.

The ETA will ultimately determine the price for inspection services although the companies involved took part in initial negotiations.
