Ethiopia: Ethio Telecom Reduces Tariff, Triples Speed of Broadband Internet

Ethio Telecom, Ethiopia's government-owned sole of telecom services provider, announced today a tariff reduction on its fixed broadband internet service while tripling its speed.

Frehiwot Tamiru, Ethio Telecom's CEO, said the tariff reduction will have a “great impact on the development of the [Ethiopia]." She also explained the intent behind the tariff reduction and speed increment is to increase customer satisfaction.

Accordingly, the tariff reduction cuts off residential fixed broadband internet costs by up to 65 percent, and enterprise users by up to 69 percent. VPN internet customers will also receive a 72 percent tariff reduction.

As per the new tariff, the previous monthly subscription fee of 978 birr for 1mbps internet service now becomes 499 birr, while the 3,191 birr fee for the 4mbps internet service becomes 699 birr.

Ethio Telecom has also disclosed a 12-month installment based payment for installation-related costs, for customers whose premises are located at a distance of more than 500 meters from an Ethio Telecom connection point.
