Ethiopia Commodity Exchange Traded Commodities Worth $144 Mn in January

ecxEthiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) traded commodities worth over $144.16 million (4.64 billion birr) during the month of January, the Exchange disclosed in a statement sent to 2Merkato.com.

During the 21 trading days in the month, 24,391 tons of coffee, 9,643 tons of white pea bean, 43,927 tons of sesame, 5,009 tons of soya bean, and 9,268 tons of green mung bean have been transacted.

Sesame, of which 43,927 tons have been traded for $58.72 million (1.89 billion birr), took the lead in market share contributing, 48 percent in trade volume and 41 percent in trade value.

Export trade took the lion’s share of the coffee market during the month – 51 percent of the volume and 50 percent of the value, followed by specialty and local coffee in a row.

A total of 9,268 tons of green mung bean has been traded on ECX’s platform, with a value of close to $7.5 million (240.13 million birr). The figure has shown a 14 percent rise in volume, and a 16 percent increase in value.

Compared to the previous month, soya bean’s trading has also shown a significant increase both in volume and value, 167 percent and 197 percent respectively, 5,009 tons of which has been traded for over $2 million (65.58 million birr).
