Ethiopia: Ministry Holds Discussion on Draft Excise Law

The Ethiopian Ministry of Revenues held a discussion forum with manufacturers on the draft excise tax proclamation. The new excise tax draft proclamation has been submitted to the House of Peoples’ Representatives for approval.

The discussion forum explored the historical context of excise tax, and went on to elaborate on the type and nature of items subject for excise tax, along with the reasoning behind the amended excise tax proclamation.

To be able to enforce the excise tax collection effectively, an excise tax stamp will be prepared and will be posted on items subjects to it, it has been disclosed during the discussion. Moreover, the Ministry of Revenues explained frameworks are being devised to prevent manufacturers from being taxed for damaged goods.

The newly drafted excise law amendment awaits the parliament's approval along with draft amendments privatization and investment laws.
