Ethiopia Preparing to Host More Chinese Tourists, Says Minister

Ethiopia plans to attract more tourists from Chine in light of the growing number of Chinese tourists that travel overseas, Ethiopia's Minister of Culture and Tourism announced.

Hirut Kassaw, Ethiopia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, speaking to ENA, said Ethiopia has been taking various measures to become one of the best destinations globally for Chinese tourists. To this end, she said, the ministry has prepared a new approach. The approach includes investing in the hospitality sector so it caters to the needs of Chinese tourists.

Ethiopia also plans to launch promotional campaigns in China about various tourist attractions in Ethiopia, the minister added.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Chinese tourists spent some $277.3 billion overseas in 2018, up from around $10 billion in 2000.

Pointing out that Ethiopia has not yet been able to reap benefits from this fact, Mrs. Hirut went on to indicate Ethiopia "has untapped tourism potential that [can attract] lots of Chinese tourists.”

Highlighting Ethiopia and China enjoy a comprehensive bilateral relationship, not the least Ethiopia being a top investment destination for Chinese companies, “this has to be developed into [the] tourism business,” the minister remarked.

200 million Chinese out-bounding tourists are expected to travel globally in 2020, several sources indicate.
