Ethiopia's to Hold 2nd Int'l Coffee Event

Ethiopia is set to hold its second edition of International Coffee Day. About 1,500 people, including senior government officials, diplomats, representatives of coffee producers, roasters, exporters, suppliers, international buyers as well as local and foreign experts among others, are expected to attend the opening session set for February 6, 2020, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During the event, the country will also launch its Ethiopian Coffee Brand Logo.

The three-day event, which will be held at the Millennium Hall February 6 to 8, has the motto: "Coffee from the Land of Origins." Conference, exhibition, and festival, featuring activities including among others coffee tasting, traditional coffee ceremonies and barista contest are all parts of the event.

The origin and epicenter of Arabica Coffee’s diversification, Ethiopia is known for its organic coffee.

Sahlemariam Gebremedhin, Public Relations and Communication Director at the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, speaking to the China state media Xinhua, said the event serves as a good platform to promote Ethiopia's organic coffee to the rest of the world.

56 exhibitors, hundreds of coffee buyers and experts from all over the world, and hundreds more coffee industry actors in Ethiopia will take part in the event. Mr. Sahlemariam noted. The event also provides opportunity for experience and knowledge sharing as well as international best practices on the sector, he added.

Ethiopian coffee is recognized worldwide for its level of quality and flavor, which ranges from winy to fruity and chocolaty, making the country's coffees excellent single varietals or delicious players in blends.

Although coffee is now grown in many countries around the world, Ethiopia remains one of the chief players in the global market, by exporting exceptionally flavorful gourmet coffees to the world.

Ethiopia is the largest coffee producer in Africa, with average annual exports of 200,000 tons over the last decade.

Albeit obtaining over 30 percent of its foreign exchange from exporting coffee, Ethiopia consumes half of the coffee it produces locally.
