Ethiopia Working to Improve Logistics, Transport, Deputy PM Says

Ethiopia is working vigorously to improve its transport and logistics services, Demeke Mekonnen, Ethiopia's Deputy Prime Minister said. Mr. Demeke said this is part of an effort to cement strong global economic relations.

The Deputy Prime Minister made the remark while taking part in a global meeting on logistics and transport service system, on the sideline of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Addressing the meeting, he said his government has been implementing a sweeping economic reform aimed at strengthening the active involvement of the private sector, and reinvigorating the economy.

Mr. Demeke said the Ethiopian government has identified improving logistics and transportation among areas of priority in its economic reform moves. He went on to say that Ethiopia is working to build sound infrastructure in a move to create strong and competitive economy ties both at regional and continental levels.

Among the measures that have been taken by the government are: administrative reforms and service optimization on the top of a 2.5 billion birr, the construction of a 750-kilometer railway connecting Addis Ababa with the port in Djibouti launched last year, which cuts down a three-day journey down to 12 hours. Another notable mention is a flagship road-building program, one of several planned, is a 200-kilometer expressway connecting Hawassa, home to the country’s largest industrial park, with the capital Addis Ababa.

Participants of the World Economic Forum commended Ethiopia’s efforts towards improving the logistic and transport services.
