Ethiopia: ESLSE Signs Fertilizer Shipment Agreement with DHL, Diamond Shipping

Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE) entered a charter party contract agreement for shipment of import fertilizer with DHL Global Forwarding and Diamond Shipping Company.

Inking the agreement were Roba Megersa, CEO of ESLSE, Li Jiang, DHL Global Forwarding’s Managing Director, and Ashok Jain, Director of Diamond Shipping Company. Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopia's Minister of Transport, presided over the signing ceremony in Addis.

According to ESLSE's CEO, the sea transport of a total of 1.5 million tons of import fertilizer by the two companies, which will cost over $42 million, reduces expenses by up to 75 percent compared to previous times. Mr. Roba indicated fertilizers are imported from the ports of Morocco, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Egypt.

Some 900,000 tons will be transported by DHL Global Forwarding, which is the world’s leading express delivery and logistics company, while the rest 560 thousand tons will be transported by Diamond Shipping Company.

Shipping 75,000 tons of fertilizers at once is a new record amount both for ESLSE and the Port of Djibouti. The Port of Djibouti has not seen over 50,000 tons of fertilizers in lodging so far.

Most of the purchased fertilizer is expected to reach the Port of Djibouti this month and will all be apportioned to unions and users until June with the exception of Urea, it was indicated.
