Ethiopian, CBE Announce Platinum Co-Branded Card Payment Channel

Ethiopian Airlines and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) launched a platinum co-branded card payment channel to enable Ethiopian Airlines customers to pay for their flights.

At the launching, it was noted that through its digital payment channels, CBE facilitated the sale of 67,480 Ethiopian e-tickets worth nearly 260 million birr within ten months. CBE made use of its app of CBE Birr and online booking options at all its branches to sell the said number of tickets.

The digital payment solution is geared towards allowing customers to use CBE’s digital payment channels and fly to over 125 destinations of Ethiopian worldwide.

Tewolde GebreMariam, Ethiopian's Group CEO, said Ethiopian has been working in collaboration with CBE for a long time in multifaceted areas to reach on the current remarkable achievement. “The digital payment service of CBE has availed us the opportunity to greatly streamline our payment systems and help our customers process their flights at ease, in an efficient and effective manner,” he said

Highlighting Ethiopian is a customer-focused airline, Mr. Tewolde added, “We have invested heavily on digitizing our systems and operations to meet the evolving expectation of customers.”

Bacha Gina, President and CEO of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, said they are “proud to have pioneered the modernization of payment systems in Ethiopia.”

The various e-payment facilities that the bank deployed have enabled it to become a leader in the provision of technology-based banking services, Mr. Bacha observed. The platinum co-branded card payment channel is intended to help customers save time and hassle, easing the process and making it efficient, he added.
