Ethiopia's sole telecom services provider Ethio Telecom said it has reduced roaming tariff in 56 countries, by making agreements with 73 operators in the countries.
Roaming service enables mobile users to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive SMS as well as access internet service while traveling outside the geographical coverage area of their own home network by using a visited network.
Ethio Telecom has roaming service agreements with 536 operators all over the globe. The company added they are "negotiating with additional operators" other than the 73.
“The high cost required to deliver roaming service and the expensiveness in the way we used to do business were the major reasons for the expensiveness of our roaming services. As a result, for the past several months we have been negotiating with various operators across the globe to deliver the service in a new business model and revise roaming service charges,” Ethio Telecom announced.
The tariff reduction table displayed on Ethio Telecom's website shows a tariff reduction of up to over eighty percent for carriers in some countries.
