Oxford Launches Handbook of Ethiopian Economy

The Oxford Handbook of Ethiopian Economy, a handbook comprised of fifty chapters, was launched at the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) Hall. Oxford University Press published the handbook.

The thousand-page handbook is a work of some seventy well-known Ethiopian and other global economists. The book has several sections each focusing on different key areas of the Ethiopian economy: economic development, social policy, agricultural and rural transformation, industrialization and urbanization, and structural transformation.

Arkebe Oqubay (Ph.D.), one of the three editors of the handbook and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, noted the handbook took about four years to become a reality. Dr. Arkebe also said the handbook is highly scholarly and emphasizes evidence-based research. It seeks “truth from fact,” he stated.

Fantu Cheru, Senior Researcher and Emeritus Professor at Leiden University (The Netherlands), and Christopher Cramer, Professor of Political Economy of Development at the University of London, UK, are the other two editors.

The handbook was initially released in February this year.
