Ethiopia's Bole Airport Sees Record Number of Passengers

Ethiopia's biggest airport at the capital Addis Ababa, Bole International Airport, is having a record number of international passengers travel through it, serving as the major gateway to Africa.

On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, alone, the Airport saw some 29,528 passengers, of which 21,028 departing while 8,500 were arriving. This has been the busiest day at Ethiopia's Bole International Airport so far, a record number for the terminal.

Getaneh Adera, Director of Bole International Airport and Acting CEO of Ethiopian Airports, expressing the excitement felt at the terminal for serving a record number of passengers this summer, said this has to do “with the partial opening of the new terminal which will more than double the capacity of the airport.”

As the home base of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest flag-carrier serving over 120 cities around the world, Addis Ababa has turned into a bustling hub handling hundreds of flights each day. The Airport has seen a major expansion recently which will boost its capacity to cater to 22 million passengers annually.

Last year, Addis Ababa surpassed Dubai as the top transit hub for long-haul passengers into Africa.
