Ethiopia Earns $103 mil in Exports from Industrial Parks in 9 Months

Ethiopia obtained $103 million from export generated by industrial parks in the past nine months, the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) announced. This shows an increment by 40 percent when compared to last year’s performance of the same period.

Abebe Abebayehu, Ethiopian Investment Commissioner, speaking to ENA, said 70 percent of the planned earning from industrial parks during the stated period has been accomplished. He further noted that footwear and other leather products, as well as textile and apparel have been exported to Europe, USA, Asia and other export destinations.

Mr. Abebe, stating that industrial parks across the country have created employement for over 70,000 workers, said Ethiopia has been able to attract $2.5 billion foreign direct investment in the mentioned nine months. However, the commissioner said, conflicts in different parts of Ethiopia over the past few years had a negative effect on the performance of the industrial parks. Special security precautions are put in place to curb any related safety and security risks, he added.

Up to now, Bole Lemi, Mekele, and Adama Industrial Parks have partially started operation while Hawassa Industrial Park is fully operational.

Over the coming years, Ethiopia hopes to have a total of 30 industrial parks, as part of a strategy to increase foreign exchange earnings and increase foreign direct investment.
