Ethiopia: Modjo Dry Port to Be Linked with Industry Parks

The Modjo dry port will be linked with industry parks via rail and roads, said Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise (ESLSE). This will help boost Ethiopia’s exports, ESLSE added.

Ashebir Nota, Corporate Department Communication Director at ESLSE, said the Modjo dry port is being prepared for a new expansion plan that seeks to support Ethiopia’s manufacturing export. “An industrial processing center will also be set up at the port,” he told the Ethiopian Herald.

The World Bank approved a $150 million loan for the expansion project two years ago, it was learnt. However, the interlinking via railways and expressways to industry parks will require an additional budget, Ashebir noted. When completed, the project will increase the size of the Modjo dry port from 158 to 188 hectares.

“Modjo is becoming a hub of dry port services in Ethiopia as it meets international standards. It is providing a better container and logistics services more than ever,” Ashebir explained.

The Modjo dry port is largest of seven of its kind, hosting 74 percent of Ethiopia’s imports. It was also disclosed that ESLSE has finalized the master plan and business plan to construct new dry ports in Mekelle (Tigray region) and Woreta (Amhara region). It was further noted that ESLSE opened a logistics office at the Hawassa Industry Park.
