Ethiopia Earns $28.4 Million in 5 Months from Electricity Exports

In the past five months from June to October, Ethiopia has managed to get $28.4 million from export of electricity to Sudan and Djibouti, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) announces. Out of the $28.4 million, $17.5 million is earned from Djibouti, while the rest, $10.9 million came from the export to Sudan.

Ethiopia had earned $37 million in the first nine months of the last fiscal year as well, after exporting 190MW of power. EEPCo has also said that Ethiopia is working to promote regional integration through cross-border electricity interconnections. To this end, agreements have been concluded with Somaliland, Kenya, Tanzania and South Sudan.

Construction of East Africa’s first high voltage direct current (HVDC) power line project is underway with a total cost estimate of $1 billion, the funding of which is obtained from Africa Development Bank. Once the project concludes in 2019, electricity exchange between Ethiopia and Kenya is expected to begin.

Ethiopia’s total hydro power generation potential is estimated at a stellar amount of 45,000MW.
