The Main Department of Immigration and Nationality Affairs of Ethiopia is testing a system to facilitate passport provision to citizens.
The system will involve Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) to collect passport fees at 30 of its branches. Bekalu Zeleke,President of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, mentioned that the project was tested at three branches and once successful the regional branches will provide the service. He also said the system is designed to speed up the process of getting passport, lowering cash finical transaction and increasing financial inclusion. The system is expected to accommodate increasing demand for passports by saving time and money.
Regarding the project Gebereyohannes Teklu, Director of Main Department of Immigration and Nationality Affairs, said the collaboration of these two organizations showed various government offices can work in tandem . The Department has opened branches in 5 regional cities: Jimma, Mekele, Dire Dawa , Hawassa and Dessie.
