Ethiopia: AAAE to Build New Abattoir

Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise (AAAE) disclosed it will start the construction of a new export standard slaughterhouse that has the capacity of slaughtering 20,000 animals per day. In addition to this, the facility will have an integrated animal byproducts processing center.

The facility is said to aim at providing healthy and standard slaughtering services for both local and the international markets.

Commenting on the development Ataklti Gebremichael, AAAE Public Relations Head, said the construction of the new facility would provide better quality for slaughtering service.

The finance is said to have been secured from French Development Agency (AFD). The Agency provided Euros 70.5 million loan.

According to Ataklti, the loan will be utilized to relocate, expand and modernize the present AAAE. “The construction of the facility would help to meet the increasing local and international export quality standard,” he added.

The new slaughterhouse would enable the capital city to save more than Birr 500,000 that it has been losing from illicit slaughtering, Ataklti furthered. In addition to this, he noted, the smell from the present abattoir located at Qera would not occur.
