Ethiopian Revenue Authority Collects More Than 16 Billion Birr in Tax

The Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA) announced that it collected over 16 billion birr form tax revenue. The tax was collected in the first quarter of this fiscal year nationally with the exception of Addis Ababa.

ERCA plans to collect 76 billion birr in tax revenue this year according to Gebrewahid Woldegiorgis Law Enforcement Deputy Director for ERCA. It is expected that Ethiopia will raise 13% of the total national income in tax revenue this year he said.

In related news more than 40 million birr in revenue from various sources was raised from 17 Woreda’s in Eastern Wollega this fiscal year according to reports from the revenue office in zone.

Sources of revenue include house rent, municipality, investment and trade as well as tax said Mulugeta Assefa an expert with the Wollega Revenue Office. The revenue office aims to raise above 137 million birr by the end of this fiscal year he added.

The money raised in the zone exceeds that of the same time last year by 17 million birr according to Mulugeta.

The increase in the amount of revenue raised is largely due to the increased awareness on the part of tax payers and efficient operations on the side of revenue officials to ensure effective services he added.
