Ethiopia: CETU Pushing for Salary Increment

Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) has called for salary increment following the devaluation that might result in inflation. The request was made during the general assembly held at the Confederation’s premises on October 26, 2017.

It was on October 11, 2017 that the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) devaluated Birr by 15 percent. This in turn shot up the exchange rate for 1 USD from 23.40 Birr to 26.91 Birr.

According to CETU, after the devaluation the market is seeing price increase on consumable goods, spare parts and rebars.

The Confederation has also some concern regarding the draft labour law. It has forwarded complaints on 10 points and warned of a possible national labour strikes if the concerns are not addressed properly.
