Ethiopia: ERC Bagged 110 Million Birr

Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC) earned more than 110 million Birr from the capital city’s railway, Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit (AA-LRT). The income was from the just concluded fiscal year.

The Corporation’s Chief Officer Communication Service, Dereje Tefera, noted the Corporation made the money from 35 million people who took a ride on the railway. He also noted lack of sufficient power supply, spare parts, and disruption of communication cables and annual inspection of trains were among challenges the corporation faced to meet its annual target.

The Corporation received 1.5 billion Birr worth subsidy from Addis Ababa City Administration every year, Dereje explained. In addition to this, the Corporation had received 10 sites from the city administration to run its own business and maximize income.

Dereje also noted that the Corporation intensively worked on capacity building for engineers, train drivers and producing additional officers to handle the management works from the Chinese company by the coming April.
