Ethiopia: Inflation Rose to 8.7 Percent in May

Central Statistics Agency disclosed Ethiopia’s year-on-year inflation has increased to 8.7 percent in May from 8.6 percent, where it stood in the previous month.

During May food inflation rose to 12.3 percent from where it stood in April, 12.2 percent. This is attributed to the price increase for cereals such as teff, maize, wheat, sorghum and barely. The food price increase is also expected to continue to increase during the month of June.

Nevertheless, in May the price of vegetables, pulses, potatoes and other tubers and coffee declined.

On the other hand, non-food inflation rose by 4.7 percent in the month of May. However, back in April it stood at 4.6 percent. This is said to be because of the rise in the prices of clothing and footwear as well as household goods and furniture.
