Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) disclosed it has allocated 23 million Birr to maintain the Abay Bridge joining Bahirdar City with Gonder. The maintenance work is going to be undertaken by the Chinese construction company, China Communications Construction Co., Ltd. (CCCC).

The task is expected to be completed in 3 months’ time.

Commenting on the development, Public Relations Directorate Director at ERA, Samson Wondimu, said the bridge had been serving for decades and it was too old to deliver any further service. Samson also took this chance to call onto heavy vehicle drivers to use alternative roads to lessen inconveniences.

According to the Director, as a detour for the route from Gonder – Bahir Dar they can be use Durbete – Shawla road. Travelers from Kombolcha to Bahir Dar, on the other hand, can use Kombolcha – Gumdewoine. The brodge would also be open for service only from 9 pm to 6 in the morning, Samson explained.

The bridge, according to Walta Information Center, has been giving service for more than 6 decades.
