Ethiopia: Gibe III Started Power Generation

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) disclosed Gilgel Gibe III hydroelectric project has commenced generating power. According to the CEO of EEP, Azeb Asnake (Engineer), the plant for the time being is generating 800 megawatts of electric power.

The CEO noted the plant was equipped with 10 Fracins turbines each, with 187 megawatts making the total installed capacity 1,870 megawatts. Currently the project is 96 percent complete, she furthered.

Among the 10 turbines 8 of them has started generating power, Azeb explained. Nevertheless, because of the dam’s water volume the turbines are currently generating 100 to 120 megawatts.

The commencement of power generation from Gilgel Gibe III would fill the power supply gap created by the El Nino weather which affected the volume of water within the hydropower dams, Azeb explained.

According to the CEO, the 9th turbine is already installed while the 10th turbine would be installed soon.
