Ethiopia: EEP to Undertake 2 Billion Birr Expansion Project

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) disclosed it will undertake expansion work in 3 cities of Amhara State; Bahir Dar, Kombolcha and Woldia. The expansion work is estimated to cost 2 billion Birr.

Azeb Asnake, EEP’s CEO, concluded a contract with Shanghai Electric Group Company’s representative, Xiang Rui for the project.

As per the agreement, Woldia will have a 400-kV power substation with 450 MW carrying capacity. The expansion in Kombolcha, on the other hand, is expected to enhance the supply of 900 MW electric power.

The project is aimed at meeting power demands of industrial parks, electrified train and condominium houses to be built in the areas.

According to Fana Broadcasting Corporate, around 85 percent of the project’s cost will be covered from a loan secured from Export Import (EXIM) Bank of China. The rest, 15 percent of the cost, will be covered by the Ethiopian government.

The project is scheduled to be finalized in a year and 6 months time.
